Core skills for a SailPoint career
A strong learning path covers both identity governance and the wider technical environment:
- IAM fundamentals: joiner-mover-leaver, RBAC, ABAC, least privilege, and segregation of duties.
- SailPoint platforms: IdentityIQ fundamentals and Identity Security Cloud concepts.
- Integration skills: REST APIs, JSON, CSV data handling, directories, and common HR-source patterns.
- Development basics: Java, Spring Boot concepts, SQL, and troubleshooting logs.
- Security operations: access reviews, provisioning failures, audit evidence, and incident-aware access control.
A practical study plan
Start by learning the identity lifecycle and how a workforce identity is created, updated, and deactivated. Next, study how applications store accounts and entitlements. Then practise mapping those accounts to an identity and granting access through a role or access profile.
Move on to the controls that make IAM an identity-governance discipline: access requests, approvals, certifications, policy violations, and remediation. Each topic should include a hands-on exercise, not only reading or video content.
Build a portfolio with realistic scenarios
A useful IAM portfolio can be built without exposing client data. Create fictional scenarios such as:
- Onboard an HR source and define a correlation strategy.
- Model access for a finance analyst, a contractor, and a privileged administrator.
- Create an approval workflow for an application access request.
- Design an access-review campaign with clear entitlement descriptions.
- Document how a failed deprovisioning event would be detected and resolved.
These examples show that you can think through the operational side of cyber security, not just configure a screen.
